Controller – Insurance Brokerage Sector
Location: Remote (Candidates must reside in EST or CST time zones)
Compensation: $135,000 – $145,000 base + bonus + potential equity
Overview
The HT Group has partnered with a growing, PE-backed, independent insurance brokerage in their search for a highly strategic and hands-on Controller to lead and oversee all financial operations. This role will be responsible for all aspects of the accounting cycle: month-end close, financial reporting, cash management, and supporting executive leadership with data-driven insights, especially in an acquisition-driven environment.
This is a fully remote role, requiring availability during Eastern or Central time zone business hours.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee all company financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency
Manage month-end close cycle and all aspects of the accounting department (e.g., AR/AP, annual audit process, validating debt covenant compliance)
Analyze financial performance, trends, and key business drivers to support strategic decision-making
Oversee cash flow management and ensure operational liquidity
Evaluate and optimize capital structure and financial strategies
Support M&A activity, primarily focused on post-acquisition integration support
Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
Prepare and present financial reports to executive leadership
Manage and mentor a small accounting/finance team
Partner cross-functionally with Operations and Executive Leadership
Assist with corporate tax oversight and coordination with external partners
Reconcile financials across partnerships and entities
Manage monthly commission calculations and ensure timely payments to agents
Qualifications
Proven experience as a Controller, Director of Accounting, or similar senior accounting role within the insurance brokerage industry
Strong understanding of the month-end close process, insurance industry accounting principles, and how to create financial reporting packages
Experience in forecasting, budgeting, and data analysis
Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a growing organization
Strong leadership and team management skills
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
High attention to detail with strong analytical capabilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (advanced Excel required)
Experience with Applied Epic or insurance systems is required
Experience with NetSuite ERP is preferred
Insurance brokerage industry experience required
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) integration experience is highly desired
